Annual Campaign for BUFA and
Brock Community
SOCIAL JUSTICE FUND

Annual Campaign for
BUFA and Brock Community
Social Justice Fund (January - November 2008)

Dear Colleague,

The BUFA and Brock Community Social Justice Committee invites you to support the cause of social justice in our national and global communities.  In fulfilling its mandate of fostering a critical intelligence, the university is responsible for actively promoting principles of social responsibility, justice, tolerance, and solidarity.  The support of social justice is also one of the concerns of unions, though the Social Justice Fund initiative is directed at union members and non-unionized employees alike.

The BUFA Social Justice Committee was established to advance the cause of justice through the administration of funds designed to raise awareness and moneys for international and national development projects.  Last year's campaign was the most successful to date in generating five thousand dollars.  The SJ Committee and the six organizations that received the funds in December 2007 thank you tremendously for your generosity.

The VP of Finance and Administration and the Director of Human Resources will continue to help ensure that the SJF is effectively and efficiently managed.

Since social justice translates into a defence of human rights, the SJF will not be used to support charities; thus it is not in competition with the United Way Campaign, which concentrates on local charities.  The SJF is intended exclusively to fund projects or programs designed to reform unjust social, political, and economic structures and to restore social justice.

In launching the current campaign, the BUFA Social Justice Committee has identified a number of justice causes and corresponding national and international justice organizations which advance those causes: 1) Sustainable Development: Oxfam Canada;  2) Education: The Labourer-Teacher Program;  3) Environment: Sierra Club of Canada;  4) Health: Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders;  5) Refugees: World University Service of Canada;  6) Women: MATCH International Centre.   All of the organizations have registered charity status, and we have provided a detailed description of and contact information for each organization.  One of the organizations -- The Labourer-Teacher Program -- is exclusively Canadian.

We invite you to donate to the causes and organizations of your choice through tax-deductible ongoing or one-time automatic payroll deductions.  Income tax receipts will be issued by the organizations.  Payroll has opened accounts for the SJF, and annual campaigns will end 30 November to allow tax receipts to be issued to individual donors in a timely fashion.

Please send your completed form to HR, Payroll Dept., c/o Marilyn Chute.  If you wish to receive another form, please contact the BUFA Office.  Direct comments and inquiries about the SJF to the members of the BUFA and Brock Community Social Justice Committee: Elizabeth Sauer [Chair] ( ), Tony Ward ( ), Richard Mitchell ( ).

THANK YOU
for helping to make our 2008 campaign successful!
